Ruth was born in Glendale, CA, to Charles and Rose Haynie. Her father was a pastor. She trusted Christ as personal Savior at five years of age. While young, Ruth began to have a sense that God was calling her to be a missionary. She began teaching at age fourteen in a wide range of church and camp ministries.

Ruth attended Biola College in preparation to be a school teacher and to teach missionary children. After finishing her California Teaching Credential requirements at California State University, Humboldt, she taught a number of years in Christian schools in Galt, El Sobrante, and Eureka, plus a couple of years of substitute teaching in public schools. Next came short-term missionary experiences in Haiti and Bolivia, after which she completed her master's degree at California State University, Chico. In 1993 the Lord opened the door for her to join the faculty at Cornerstone Bible Institute. Ruth teaches Christian education and missions classes and is the librarian and Courier editor.
